Psychologist

Having graduated from the Siotto Pintor classical lyceum in his native city and taken his degree at the University of Pisa, he refined his theoretical and historical-philosophical training in Tübingen and Freiburg, attending the lectures of Ernst Bloch and Eugen Fink; in Heidelberg, with Karl Löwith and Dieter Henrich; and later at the University of Bochum. He also earned the licence diploma and the advanced diploma of the Scuola Normale Superiore. He was a visiting professor at the Universities of Cambridge, Ottawa, New York, Toronto, Girona, Mexico City and UCLA (Los Angeles), and lectured at many universities across Europe, the Americas and Australia. From 1981 to 1983 he served on the editorial board of the journal Laboratorio politico. From 1995 he collaborated with Massimo Cacciari, Massimo Donà, Giuseppe Barzaghi, Salvatore Natoli and Stefano Zamagni in the initiative La filosofia nei luoghi del silenzio, an attempt to combine philosophy and contemplation in the form of a communal retreat. From 2006 he was a tenured professor of Philosophy at UCLA in Los Angeles, after having long taught History of Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Scuola Normale Superiore and at the University of Pisa, where he continued to teach the occasional course. He was also a member of the international Advisory Board of the IED — Istituto Europeo di Design. From 13 November 2015 Remo Bodei was a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei, for the class of Moral, Historical and Philosophical Sciences. Remo Bodei died on 7 November 2019, at the age of 81. He was the husband of the historian Gabriella Giglioni. His books have been translated into many languages.
