Philosopher of science
After earning his degree in Philosophy of Science at the University of Milan, he continued his training in the United States, where he carried out doctoral and post-doctoral research in evolutionary biology and philosophy of biology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. During this period he worked under the supervision of two important scholars, Niles Eldredge and Ian Tattersall, deepening his study of topics related to evolution and the theoretical foundations of the biological sciences.
On his return to Italy, he began his academic career at the University of Milan-Bicocca, where from 2005 to 2012 he was an associate professor of Philosophy of Science. In those years he taught subjects such as Epistemology and Evolutionary Epistemology, and also held academic coordination roles, including deputy director of the “Riccardo Massa” Department of Human Sciences for Education and vice-chair of the degree programme in Educational Sciences.
Since 2012 he has been a full professor at the University of Padua, in the Department of Biology, where he teaches Philosophy of the Biological Sciences, Bioethics and Science Communication in Natural History. Over the years he has also taken on important institutional roles, including that of the Rector's Delegate for Institutional Communication since 2016. He also led the Italian Society for Evolutionary Biology (SIBE) as president between 2017 and 2019, and is a member of several Italian scientific academies, including the Veneto Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts and the Academy of Sciences of Turin.
His research and publishing activity focuses mainly on evolutionary biology, human evolution and the philosophy of science, with numerous internationally recognised scientific contributions and a significant impact on contemporary academic debate.
